Professor of state theory and global governance in the Sociology Department at the University of Bielefeld, he has been a visiting professor at Washington, Geneva and Vienna. In1994 he received the Leibniz Award from the German national research council.
His main areas of study are global governance, state theory, knowledge management and organizational development. Among his most recent books are Global governance and Atopia, Dystopia, Heterotopia.
